The project`s motto is “Strata”, or layers, inspired by archaeological layers. The volume is thus composed by three separate layers, representing the three main exhibition floors. The existing Archaeological museum is a combination of two dairy production buildings from the 1930`s and a more recent part from the mid 1990`s.
The site is surrounded by typical Stavanger one-family timber houses. The new extension is playing on two scales, housing and museum, and at the same time relating to the large scale dairy building. The individual layering relates to the scale of the small timber houses.
