Salahaddin University is one of the oldest and largest institutions of higher learning in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. The Noruz consortium has been awarded the contract by the Kurdish authorities to develop a master plan, the architectural and engineering design and the EPC tender documents for a new university campus, situated approximately 6 km from the city centre on the Erbil-Kirkuk highway.
The consortium is a joint venture comprising
Narud Stokke Wiig (NSWAP) Architects and Planners, Oslo (Lead partner)
Narud Stokke Wiig (NSW) Architects, Oslo
Snøhetta Architects and Landscape Architects, Oslo
Dar al Imran Planners, Architects and Engineers in Erbil in association with Norconsult, Oslo which provides engineering services to the consortium.
The plan form is organized around two main north south outdoor axes. These provide areas of communication and streets between the colleges. A central core consists of
administrative and public buildings and
colleges, separated by squares and plazas of different sizes and functions, partly covered by built structures and partly by soft landscaping.
Total gross area is approximately 850 000 m². This comprises 50% of the area for colleges, 25% staff and student accommodation and 25% common buildings such as administration facilities, museum, student union, library, sport complex facilities, technical buildings etc.
The master plan was developed during 2007 and concept design for buildings and
landscaping from the end of 2007 to April 2008. Further detailing for contractors is ongoing through 2008 and 2009.
